The terror threat level in Sweden has been raised to four on a five-point scale.
In response, the Swedish Police Authority has announced a total ban on bags at all major events.
"This might lead to certain adjustment challenges," states Gabriel Monidelle, CEO of Hockeyallsvenskan, to SVT Sport. The prohibition will apply to events such as the men's Allsvenskan soccer league, SHL, and national team matches.
Hockeyallsvenskan will be the first league to implement this new policy and has a full round of seven matches scheduled for tonight.
"Due to the pandemic in recent years, our clubs unfortunately have gotten used to making swift changes. However, they have less than 24 hours to adjust, which could pose certain challenges. Yet, I feel confident and don't anticipate any problems," comments Monidelle.
Also Includes Handbags
On their website, the police clarify that the decision largely impacts large sports events (all at the national level) and major concerts.
The police further specify that the following leagues will be affected: men's Allsvenskan soccer, Superettan, the Swedish Cup, SHL, Hockeyallsvenskan, Hockeyettan, various forms of European games, and respective sports' national matches. The ban will remain in effect indefinitely and also extends to handbags.
"There's not much debate about it. With a terror threat at level 4, it's a clear directive," remarks Johan Lindvall, Secretary-General of Swedish Elite Football (Sef).
Exceptions Might Be Allowed
He mentions that Sef will be exploring ways to support the clubs. There are only two rounds left in the Swedish soccer season.
The Swedish Ice Hockey Association announces on their website:
"A complete ban on bringing bags to our games is now in effect. This follows a decision by the Swedish Police Authority applicable to all major sports events. Exceptions can only be made for medical reasons, provided the bag has been checked."
